Jayapal Hails Federal Judge’s Order Halting President Trump’s Ban on Immigration from Muslim Countries

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, in response to a lawsuit by Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson, Seattle-based federal judge James Robart halted key provisions of President Trump’s executive orders banning immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries.

“This is fantastic and critically important news,” said Rep. Jayapal. “These orders are inhumane and unconstitutional. I want to commend the work of Attorney General Ferguson and our governor, Jay Inslee, as well as all the attorneys from ACLU and the Northwest Immigrants Rights Project that contributed to getting us to this point. This ruling came from a courthouse in Seattle and it makes me so proud of my city and my state for leading the way in defense of human rights and the rule of law. Washington leads the way.”

Judge Robart’s temporary restraining order immediately stops federal officials from enforcing parts of the ban that target immigrants and refugees from seven Muslim-majority countries and stops federal officers from enforcing parts of the ban that grant exemptions based on religion, according to reports.
