Rep. Jayapal Appointed to Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal was appointed to the Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security for the 115th Congress. This appointment positions Jayapal to play a central role in the fight for comprehensive immigration reform.

“I’m thrilled to be appointed to the Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security,” said Rep. Jayapal. “As an activist and an organizer, I was a leader in the movement for some of the most progressive immigration policies in the country, including pushing for comprehensive and humane immigration reform, passing the DREAM Act, and promoting citizenship and preserving drivers’ licenses for all. I look forward to bringing the same passion and experience on behalf of immigrant communities in Washington’s 7th District and across the country.”

The Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security has jurisdiction over immigration and naturalization, border security, treaties, admission of refugees, conventions and international agreements, private immigration and claims bills, and non-border enforcement among other subject matters.

“Immigrants in my district and around the country are terrified of what this administration and Republicans in Congress represent,”added Jayapal. “Now more than ever, we need to fight against any attempts to break up immigrant families, create a Muslim registry, or violate our civil rights and civil liberties.” Rep. Jayapal previously founded the immigrant rights group Hate Free Zone, now OneAmerica, and successfully sued the George W. Bush administration to stop the illegal deportations of thousands of Somalis after the September 11, 2001 attacks. OneAmerica was also a key player on comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level.
