Jayapal on Senate’s TrumpCare Bill
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal issued the following statement in response to the Senate’s disastrous TrumpCare bill released today:
“This cruel plan strips American families of their health care, slashes Medicaid and cuts essential health benefits for millions – all while giving massive tax cuts to billionaires. Republicans cannot claim they care about people and support this heartless bill,” said Rep. Jayapal. “This TrumpCare bill was negotiated by thirteen male politicians behind closed doors. How can it possibly reflect the needs of the American people?”
Background:
The Senate’s health care bill would:
- Take away health insurance from millions of people and make it less affordable for those who still have insurance;
- Raise out-of-pocket costs for middle class families, with higher deductibles and cost-sharing;
- Gut Essential Health Benefits, allowing insurance companies to offer less than adequate health plans;
- Force Americans aged 50-64 to pay premiums five times higher than what others pay for health coverage, no matter how healthy they are;
- Essentially defund Planned Parenthood by blocking people with Medicaid coverage from accessing preventive care at Planned Parenthood health centers – including birth control, cancer screenings and STD testing and treatment;
- Gut the Medicaid program, which will impact approximately 1 in 5 women of reproductive age who rely on access to no-cost, critical reproductive health care such as birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings and maternity care.
