Jayapal Statement on Amazon Workers’ Strike
WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) released the following statement after the Teamsters announced a strike following Amazon’s refusal to bargain with unionized Amazon workers:
“Amazon workers deserve fair pay, safe working conditions, and good benefits. Amazon is one of the largest corporations in the world with the world’s second richest man in the world as Founder and Executive Chair. Amazon should, at a minimum, ensure that the workers powering Amazon and Bezos’s own wealth are paid fairly so they can afford rent, groceries, and a decent life.
“As a corporation headquartered in my district and with such a massive footprint on communities across the country and such huge profits, it is important that the company treat their workers with dignity and respect. Unions help protect workers, hold corporate leadership accountable, and drive better success for the company as a whole. It is disappointing that over the past year, Amazon has refused to honor rulings from the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) that seek to protect workers and instead joined legal efforts to challenge the NLRB’s constitutionality in court.
“I urge Amazon to come to the table and negotiate in good faith immediately.”
