Jayapal Celebrates House Passage of Legislation Codifying Contraception Access

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, issued the following statement after the House successfully passed the Right to Contraception Act, codifying access to contraception:

“The extremist Supreme Court’s disastrous Dobbs decision last month made it abundantly clear that settled precedent has been thrown out of the window. They are not going to stop at abortion. It is our duty as members of Congress to legislate and protect people’s constitutional rights.

“The People’s House is taking this mission seriously. I am so proud that we have passed the Women’s Health Protection Act again and the Respect for Marriage Act, which will codify the right to abortion and the right to marry who you love respectively.

“And today, we take it one step further by passing the Right to Contraception Act, which will codify people’s right to contraception. Being able to easily access contraception is fundamental to our health and well-being. It is one of the most essential tools of reproductive freedom. I hope to see my bill with Rep. Mike Thompson, the Protecting Access to Contraception Act, which is complementary to Rep. Kathy Manning’s bill, move forward soon. Together, these bills will ensure that no one, not even Supreme Court Justices, can threaten people’s constitutional right to contraception and to their family planning choices.”
