Seattle Mom, Child Tax Credit Recipient, to Join Jayapal as Virtual Guest for State of the Union Address

Jayapal’s selection highlights how the American Rescue Plan helped families and the urgency of passing further relief

WASHINGTON —U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) announced today that a mother from Seattle, Leanne Do, will be her virtual guest for President Joe Biden’s first State of the Union Address. Leanne, a mother of three, and her spouse relied on the enhanced Child Tax Credit payments established by the American Rescue Plan to support their family and their ability to work in non-profits and the public sector throughout the pandemic.

“Like so many across this country, Leanne’s family had come to rely on the enhanced Child Tax Credit,” said Congresswoman Jayapal. “As inflation skyrockets due to supply chain issues stemming from the pandemic and corporate greed, relief that puts money directly into the pockets of the American people is more critical than ever. My office was proud to fight for this benefit that pulled millions of families out of poverty, and I am honored that she will be joining me for President Biden’s address as we continue to fight to deliver for workers and families across this country.”

“In addition to helping our family cover the bills, the monthly child tax payments sent a clear message that my work as a mother matters – that care work is important and should be valued,” said Leanne Do.

Last year, Jayapal fought to pass the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan and send it to President Biden’s desk. This was a bold relief package meant to meet the scale of this devastating crisis by supporting workers and families through direct and much needed assistance. It included $1,400 survival checks per individual, $300 per week of expanded unemployment assistance, and a $3,000-$3,600 tax credit per child. Jayapal has also been on the front line of negotiations to pass the Build Back Better Act, which will lower costs for families across the country at a time when inflation is on the rise.

President Biden will address the nation Tuesday in his first State of the Union Address. He is expected to discuss the success of the American Rescue Plan and urge further investments into child care, climate action, health care, housing, and so much more included in the Build Back Better framework.
