Jayapal Secures One Million Dollars for Federal Homelessness Programs in FY2020 Funding Package

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Jayapal successfully secured one million dollars of additional federal funding for homelessness and housing services. Her amendment to the FY2020 appropriations bill (H.R. 3055) was approved overwhelmingly on a bipartisan basis. 

“These grants fund programs that have been shown to play key roles in addressing homelessness. Every form of homelessness – whether visible or invisible – is deeply harmful. And investing in real solutions actually reduces costs in the long term. When the House passed this amendment, we agreed that we can and must ensure housing stability for every person in this country,” said Rep. Jayapal. 

In the last week, the House also passed four additional amendments by Representative Jayapal aimed at creating safe, sustainable and healthy communities:

  • Permanent Supportive Housing: Supports the creation of housing using the highly effective permanent supportive housing model for persons returning home after incarceration. 
  • Airport Noise and Environmental Streamlining: Directs an additional $2 million toward airport noise mitigation efforts, including for communities surrounding Sea-Tac Airport.
  • Restorative Justice Research: Increases funding for a national center that will research and advance restorative justice approaches. 
  • FAA Safety Certification: Transfers an addition $1 million in funding for the FAA’s safety certification process audit, which includes a review of the 737-MAX certification process.

“There is a desperate need for our government to shift funding away from corporations and senseless military spending, and put those resources towards areas that impact the daily lives of our citizens and the members of our communities that have been left behind for far too long. I was honored to have the chance to lead and ultimately pass five amendments to the Fiscal Year 2020 budget that will directly affect my district as well as districts across the nation,” said Rep. Jayapal.
