Jayapal Statement on Extended Immigrant Protections for Venezuela, Sudan, Ukraine, El Salvador
WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) released the following statement regarding the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) announcement that they would extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuela, Sudan, Ukraine, and El Salvador.
“Today’s announcement is welcome news. The United States must fulfill its responsibility to those fleeing violence, economic and political crises, and environmental disasters. I thank the Biden-Harris Administration for taking these steps to support Venezuelans, Sudanese, Ukrainians, and Salvadorans through extended TPS designations — a step I have been strongly advocating for.
“While the incoming Trump administration has threatened to cut off legal pathways, TPS is a critical legal pathway, allowing beneficiaries to reside and work in the United States when they cannot safely return to their home country. There is much work to be done to fix our broken immigration system, but these designations are an important step to add certainty and stability to the lives of so many families across this country. I urge the Administration to robustly use its authorities to designate TPS for all eligible countries.”
TPS is a designation that temporarily allows foreign nationals who are already in the United States to remain lawfully during periods that would prevent the country’s nationals from returning safely. This announcement allows approximately 600,000 Venezuelans, 1,900 Sudanese, 103,700 Ukrainians, and 234,000 Salvadorans to re-register for TPS. This registration includes rigorous national security and public safety vetting.
TPS was today extended for:
- Venezuela through October 2, 2026;
- Sudan through October 19, 2026;
- Ukraine through October 19, 2026;
- El Salvador through September 9, 2026.
