Jayapal Statement on Continuing Resolution Vote
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal released the following statement regarding today’s Continuing Resolution (CR) vote, H.R. 9494, which failed 202-220.
“Today I voted ‘NO’ on the CR. Speaker Mike Johnson is simply playing to the extremists in his party, attaching poison pill legislation to what should be a clean continuing resolution to keep the government funding. This legislation is already a non-starter in the Senate, increasing Social Security wait times, ending funding for food access for low-income families, jeopardizing veterans’ medical care, and blocking necessary funding for disaster recovery work.
“Now that this vote has failed, we need Speaker Johnson to stop threatening Americans’ lives and to put forward a clean continuing resolution that keeps our government open. That’s the only way forward and Speaker Johnson should stop playing games with this critically important government funding.”
Today’s CR was attached to the SAVE Act, legislation unrelated to the federal budget that aims to target non-citizen voting, which is already illegal and is extremely rare. It also failed to include appropriate funding levels to maintain medical care for veterans and services provided by the Social Security Administration, emergency funds for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and an extension of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program payments.
