Nadler, Jayapal Issue Joint Statement on Annual Refugee Consultation with the Biden administration
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee and Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement issued the following statement on the annual Refugee Consultation with the Biden administration:
“The Biden administration is demonstrating its commitment to the United States’ role in protecting vulnerable refugees by maintaining a refugee cap of 125,000 for Fiscal Year 2024. The prior administration decimated our refugee resettlement infrastructure within the United States and around the world. The Biden administration has been working hard to rebuild and strengthen that system. This fiscal year, we welcomed the highest number of refugees on record since 2016. We have faith that with the improvements made by the dedicated staff at the Departments of State and Homeland Security, we will be able to safely and securely welcome even more refugees in the coming year.
“We also commend the administration for its commitment to resettle more refugees from the Western Hemisphere. People are coming to our Southwest border because they feel they have no other option to seek protection. By expanding hemispheric resettlement, the administration will minimize the numbers of people seeking asylum at the border. Through innovations like the Safe Mobility Offices, refugees in the Americas will be able to have claims adjudicated without having to make the dangerous journey to the border.
“In the face of Republican fearmongering, the Biden administration is acting in a measured, responsible way. They are advancing actual solutions to expand legal pathways and improve all aspects of our refugee system. We look forward to continuing to work with the administration on this important topic.”
