Jayapal Statement on IG Unannounced Inspections of ICE Facilities
WASHINGTON – Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Subcommittee Ranking Member Pramila Jayapal issued the following statement in regard to oversight at ICE detention facilities:
“I applaud the Inspector General for continuing to conduct these unannounced inspections of ICE detention facilities. This is imperative oversight that provides important accountability for the agency. While the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma met many of ICE’s basic standards there were some concerning deficiencies.
“I have long had concerns related to the complaint process for detained people and discussed that issue with the ICE Director earlier this year. It was also concerning to see that the facility is significantly understaffed when it comes to medical personnel and had food that was three years old in its food storage area. We will continue to closely monitor the conditions and ensure that these issues are corrected.”
