JAYAPAL STATEMENT ON DOWNTOWN SEATTLE SHOOTING
[WASHINGTON, DC] – Today, U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) issued the following statement on the shooting that occurred in downtown Seattle on January 22, 2020:
“Our hearts break for the life that was tragically cut short and the lives forever changed because of the senseless gun violence that occurred in Seattle on Wednesday evening. Those injured yesterday and all of the families impacted by this incident are close in my thoughts. We must recognize that gun violence inflicts seen and unseen wounds, and we must support these individuals and families as they grieve and work to heal both physically and emotionally. I also extend my deep gratitude to all the first responders and medical providers for their heroic efforts, as well as the Seattle Police Department and other law enforcement agencies that are working to swiftly find the perpetrator and ensure public safety.
Importantly, this incident is a devastating reminder that we need to do so much more to curb the scourge of gun violence in our state and nation. Yesterday’s shooting was the third shooting in Seattle in just two days. This cannot be—and does not have to be—the reality for our children and our community. We know not every incident of gun violence can be prevented, but it is our moral imperative to do all we can to keep our children and families safe. I pledge to continue doing everything I can to fight the gun lobby and its Congressional allies who stand in the way of commonsense gun safety and gun violence prevention measures.”
