JAYAPAL STATEMENT ON JUDICIARY COMMITTEE SCHEDULING IMPEACHMENT HEARING ON DECEMBER 4
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), a member of the House Judiciary Committee and Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, issued the following statement after House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) noticed a hearing titled “The Impeachment Inquiry into President Donald J. Trump: Constitutional Grounds for Presidential Impeachment” for Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. ET:
“The last two weeks have been a somber moment for the country, and an important moment for the truth to emerge. I look forward to receiving and reviewing information from my colleagues on the Intelligence Committee and other committees of jurisdiction on the facts and evidence they have gathered as part of the impeachment inquiry.
Impeachment is a rarely used remedy, designed to guard against the most egregious abuses of power. It is not about the personal or policy differences we have with the President. It is about the Constitution, the core facts that are in front of us, and the future of our republic, including the lasting ramifications of a President who believes he is above the law and engages in behavior that openly threatens our elections and our democracy. As we enter this next phase of our inquiry, I hope my Republican colleagues will appreciate the gravity of this moment and have the courage to consider the facts, engage productively in the inquiry, and put country over party.
Our responsibility now is to look at all of the information in front of us and remember the oath we took together—to defend the Constitution, not the President.”
