Jayapal: Reported Threat to Fire Mueller Threatens Democracy
SEATTLE – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal released the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s reported attempt to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller:
“Firing Mueller is a red line, full stop. The Special Counsel is widely respected on both sides of the aisle and his investigation into grave breaches of our electoral system is absolutely critical to our democracy – any attempt to threaten his investigation is an affront to accountability and potential legal consequences for collusion with a foreign power.
“This is truly a make-or-break moment for our country’s system of checks and balances. Today’s New York Times report lays out what can only be described as despotic and authoritarian behavior by Donald Trump – with strong overtones of Nixon’s Watergate. Now is the time for Republicans to stand up and be counted — and for all Americans to oppose the naked abuse of power by a dangerous and unhinged man who is utterly unfit to be president.”
