Jayapal Condemns Targeting of Prominent Immigrant Advocates

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal released the following statement regarding reported efforts by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport Maru Mora Villalpando and other prominent immigrant advocates around the country:

“Maru Mora Villalpando, who founded Latino Advocacy, is part of the Pacific Northwest and national movement against the rampant injustices and abuses in our immigrant incarceration system. She is one of several undocumented advocates across the country that ICE now appears to be targeting, including Ravi Ragbir, the executive director of the New Sanctuary Coalition of New York City.

“This is nothing but an attempt to drive fear into immigrant communities, intimidate people out of standing up for their rights and weaken our movement for change. I condemn the targeting of these activists in the strongest possible terms, and I call on Congress to pass the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act to stop the human rights abuses in our immigrant detention system.”
