Rep. Jayapal Responds to President Trump’s RAISE Act Announcement
SEATTLE – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement unveiling the latest version of the RAISE Act:
“President Trump is attempting to nail shut America’s door to the rest of the world. This bill is a callous attack on immigrants rooted in falsehoods perpetuated by a far-right agenda that has all but taken over the Republican party.
“As the biggest attack on legal immigration in nearly 100 years, this bill cuts the number of green cards in half. It will significantly reduce the number of people in our workforce and plunge our economy into disarray. The bottom line is that if the RAISE Act becomes law, our nation will suffer – businesses, workers and consumers will bear the burden and families will be torn apart.
“Immigration is about more than just who comes here and who is allowed to stay. It is about who we are as a country and what we are willing to stand up for. Already, on both sides of the aisle, people have come out to criticize this bad bill and the impact it would have. It is increasingly clear that Congress must intervene and work on compassionate, comprehensive, bipartisan solutions to repair our broken immigration system.”
