WASHINGTON, D.C – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, Vice Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement in response to the new report by the Congressional Budget Office that shows the devastating impact of TrumpCare on working families.
“If President Trump and the Republicans were hoping the new CBO score would make TrumpCare look any better, they’ve been proven wrong,” said Rep. Jayapal. “The score shows that the bill is an attempt to destroy health care. Republicans can bury their heads in the sand, but the CBO’s findings are plain to see for the American people.”
“House Republicans passed TrumpCare before the CBO even had a chance to release a score because they knew all along that its analysis would bolster the American people’s strong opposition to this bill. TrumpCare would kick 23 million people off health insurance, gut Medicaid by $834 billion, and impose an age tax on older Americans,” Jayapal continued. “It still gives nearly a trillion dollars in tax cuts to the wealthiest millionaires, billionaires and corporations on the backs of working people who will pay more and get less.”
“Millions of families – along with doctors, nurses, advocates for the elderly – are calling on Congress to protect their care instead of taking it away. I stand with them in resistance to this bill. It is up to Republicans to start listening,” added Jayapal.
The CBO finds that TrumpCare would leave 23 million more people uninsured over ten years than the Affordable Care Act, which it repeals. Furthermore, the CBO found health care marketplaces in some states would be destabilized and that some Americans will purchase coverage that does not cover major medical risks.
After two cancelled votes, the latest version of TrumpCare passed the House of Representatives on May 4, 2017 by four votes. Jayapal voted no on the bill, along with 192 other Democrats and 20 Republicans. The bill has not yet been brought to the Senate.
